If you love John Mayer's previous records you will love this new "Battle Studies". This album takes us back to the brilliant simplicity of John Mayer but is still very mainstream, full of captivating guitar riffs and John's beautiful smooth voice.
Each track is unique but has a common feeling that unites them all: "Heartbreak Warfare" is a great start to the album, memorable and straight away displays his fantastic voice. "All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye" starts slowly but it grows on you.
"Half of My Heart" has the presence of Taylor Swift, but I would have liked it to feature her a bit more, the small part she sings indicates that maybe it would have been a prettier song with her more involved. It's still one of my favorites though. I find irresistible the first line - "I was born in the arms of imaginary friends".
"Who Says" is probably my least favorite but still catchy and I'm sure will be loved by John's fans. "Perfectly Lonely" starts with one of the best guitar solos, very John Mayer. Sounds like one he would play live with the John Mayer Trio.
"Assassin" is my favorite. It's one of those songs that you don't notice in the first few times but then a few more listens and you really hear it and feel it. Beautiful poetic lyrics help this song stand out along with "Assassin" as the best two on the album. It's about being so in love that you'll do anything for that love. These lines sum it up pretty well - "I want you so bad I'll go back on the things I believe, There I just said it, I'm scared you'll forget about me".
"Crossroads" is a cover of Robert Johnson's song. This one is very different from the rest of the album but demonstrates John's fantastic guitar playing.
"War of My Life" is very close to the slower songs from previous records, it's a style that works quite well and this is a good if somewhat forgettable song.
"Edge of Desire" is dazzling. A great figurative song, lyrically its spot on, really gets the message across.
"Do You Know Me" is so smooth and simple. It is the shortest song on the album but not weak because of it. "Friends, Lovers or Nothing" ends the album with on a good note, with love and relationships being the central theme again.
Fantastic new album from John Mayer!
