Best Drummer All of Time

1. Neil Peart - Rush

Neil Ellwood Peart, (born September 12, 1952) is a Canadian musician and author. He is best-known as the drummer and lyricist for the rock band Rush.

Peart grew up in Port Dalhousie, Ontario (now part of St. Catharines) working the occasional odd job. However, his true ambition was to become a professional musician. During adolescence, he floated from regional band to regional band and dropped out of high school to pursue a career as a full-time drummer. After a discouraging stint in England to concentrate on his music, Peart returned home, where he joined a local Toronto band, Rush, in the summer of 1974.

Early in his career, Peart's performance style was deeply rooted in hard rock. He drew most of his inspiration from drummers such as Keith Moon and John Bonham, players who were at the forefront of the British hard rock scene. As time progressed, however, he began to emulate jazz and big band musicians Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. In 1994, Peart became a friend and pupil of jazz instructor Freddie Gruber. It was during this time that Peart decided to revamp and reinvent his playing style by incorporating jazz and swing components.[citation needed] Gruber was also responsible for introducing him to the products of Drum Workshop[citation needed], the company whose products Peart currently endorses.

Peart has received many awards for his musical performances and is known for his technical proficiency and stamina.

In addition to being a musician, Peart is also a prolific writer, having published several memoirs about his travels. Peart is also Rush's primary lyricist. In writing lyrics for Rush, Peart addresses universal themes and diverse subject matter including science fiction, fantasy, and philosophy, as well as secular, humanitarian and libertarian themes. All four of his books are travel-based non-fiction, though they diverge into his life and these subjects as well.

Peart currently resides in Santa Monica, USA with his wife, photographer Carrie Nuttall, but also has a home in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec and spends time in Toronto for recording purposes. On August 12, 2009 Nuttall gave birth to a daughter, Olivia Louise Peart.

2. John Bonham - Led Zeppelin

He was renowned for his power, fast right foot, distinctive sound and "feel" for the groove. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock music by other musicians and commentators in the industry, and one of the most important and influential musicians of his era.

Bonham lived to the age of 32; he died on 25 September 1980 due to pulmonary edema.

He has co-produced the last five Dream Theater albums with guitarist John Petrucci, starting from Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory. From A Change of Seasons onwards, Portnoy has been writing a substantial amount of Dream Theater's lyrics, filling the void left by Kevin Moore, who left the band after the band's release of Awake. He is the second youngest person (after Neil Peart) to be inducted into the Modern Drummer's Hall of Fame (at 37 years of age).

He played on all albums and singles from their debut, 1965's My Generation, to 1978's Who Are You, which was released two weeks before his death.

Moon was known for innovative, dramatic drumming, often eschewing basic back beats for a fluid, busy technique focused on fast, cascading rolls across the toms and cymbal crashes. He is considered by many to be one of the greatest drummers of all time.

5. Dave Lombardo -Slayer

Dave Lombardo (born February 16, 1965 in Havana, Cuba) is a Cuban American heavy metal drummer best known for his work with American thrash metal band Slayer.
